A Company Built on Serving
Sawdust + Fabric was established in 2015 but was not a legal entity until June of 2017. The real initial reason for making it a business was because financially, my family could not continue to support my work in building and upholstery as a hobby. Along the way the goal then became about taking this thing that started out as a hobby, and to position it so it could be so much more.
As a consumer myself, I hated shopping because even though I liked a lot of things on the market in home furnishings, I always held off on purchasing because I didn’t want my home to look like my neighbors home with the same tables and couches, etc. Sawdust + fabric is here to remedy that for those who are looking for items tailored to their need for functionality & aesthetically.
Not only does Sawdust + Fabric serve through servicing our clients through commissioned projects, the online store, or event rental. Sawdust + Fabric is positioning itself to be a resource for philanthropic serving.
See It * Cultivate It * Manifest It
When Sawdust + Fabric meets with a client my goal is to really listen to the ideas of the client and read the things that they are not saying from the things that I find out a little about the things that’s important in their day to day. So that I can go a step beyond what they think they want on the surface and provide a service and end product that goes beyond what they thought. The first initial consult ends with an first draft of the design. I take that design and sit with it for a few days and sometimes a week, studying it and going over the details looking for ways to make it better structurally, functionally, and aesthetically.
I am a wife to my college sweetheart. A mother to 3 beautifully different and amazing children. In college I majored in Biblical studies and minored in human resource and hated my job after I graduated. It wasn’t until I quit my job and began to homeschool my 2 boys at the time , found my passion for woodworking and upholstery. On top of that It had always been a deep desire to own my own business.
I am a woman with so many ideas and dreams that it's hard to keep up with them all. Tell me I can't do something and watch me get it done. With that being said, I confess being one that lacked real discipline. As I began to flourish in woodworking and as an upholsterist (I made that word up), It was clear to me that I had a long way to go in order to be really good and produce quality products. By nature I do first and ask questions later. As my woodworking and upholstery projects became more complex, it was evident that this approach would not get me far. My desire is to become a better version of me in every aspect of my life, so that everyone that I encounter may experience the best me possible. To do that I must challenge myself to become disciplined and focused in order to be successful at whatever I set out to do. Sawdust + Fabric has been vital in this journey and continues to push me beyond my skills as a woodworker and upholsterist. But in my personal life as a Orthodox Christian black women, wife, mother, and Business owner.
